Tokyo's fish market

Spending some time at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo is one of our best memories in Japan. Get up at 4 o'clock in the morning; arrive just on time for the tuna wholesale auction. The wholesale market is not open to the general public, but doors stay open and it is possible to catch some of this very special activity.

People everywhere, fish everywhere too, screams, voices, noises, speedy carts and clinging bells... a rough and fun atmosphere all around the market, especially during the auction.

Once this part of the day is over, the atmosphere seems to calm down. We discover totally unknown species, and after two hours walking in muck and water, it is time for us to have our breakfast: raw fish, fresh sushi and sashimi, eaten on a small table just next to the market...
